A closer look at the Lexus EV car: the RZ 450e

What type of battery does the Lexus EV car use?

The Lexus RZ 450e has a 71.4-kWh battery pack. Positioned beneath the car’s floor, this battery not only aids in achieving a low center of gravity for the car but also provides an ideal balance of size, weight, and power density for optimized performance. Additionally, the Lexus RZ 450e's battery is designed to retain over 90% of its capacity for 10 years, ensuring long-lasting performance and driving enjoyment.

Design and features of the Lexus RZ 450e

The RZ 450e boasts a spindle-body design exterior which focuses on aerodynamic efficiencies and style. Its steering wheel is inspired by the ‘tazuna’ reins used by Japanese equestrians, featuring switches that sync with the head-up display, allowing the driver to control navigation, audio and Drive Mode Select while still focused on driving. The RZ 450e also features a panorama roof elevating the amount of natural light shining through the cabin. The Dynamic Sky functionality also allows riders to go from transparent to opaque and back with just the press of a button. The RZ 450e also includes the Lexus Interface, which works as an extension of the driver and allows you to personalize your multi-media experience and gives you hands-free access for various features. Additional features also include a color head-up display and digital rearview mirror.

Charging the Lexus RZ 450e

Like all EVs, there are a few ways of charging the Lexus RZ 450e. You can use Level 1 charging with a standard household 120-volt current or opt for Level 2 chargers which are installed in your own home or sometimes found in public locations, such as hotel parking lots. Keep in mind that using a Level 2 charger can significantly reduce the amount of time needed to charge your EV. For the Lexus RZ 450e, charging from 20% to 80% takes 6hrs 29min using a Level 2 charger, while using a Level 1 charger will take you 23hrs 48min — that is a full day!

The fastest charging level available for EVs is Level 3 DC charging. Level 3 chargers are industrial sized chargers solely found in public locations, such as supermarkets and shopping malls.

Charging the Lexus RZ 450e, or any other electric vehicle, can take longer depending on a few things. Here's what you need to know:

  • Weather: Charging times will take longer when the temperature is lower. In freezing conditions, this increase can be very noticeable. Learn more about charging during wintertime in our blogpost.
  • Multiple Charging Sessions: If you charge your car multiple times a day using Level 3 fast charging, this can potentially cause your battery to deteriorate quicker since faster charging generates more heat and stresses the battery cells. On the contrary, charging multiple times a day with a Level 2 charger will not affect your battery’s degradation.
  • Charging Factors: Charging time can also be affected by things like how much power your battery has left or whether you're using air conditioning or other accessories.
