Do I need a permit for my home EV charger?

When installing an EV charger at home, some research can help homeowners ensure they are making the best decision that qualifies them for as many rebates as possible. It all depends on state requirements and the solution you choose for your EV. Lectrium is here to be a resource.

Do I need a permit to install an EV charger?

  • If your installation requires electrical upgrades to your home, then yes, in most cases you will need a permit for the EV charger installation. In some cases you or an electrician might need to pull up a permit, in other cases the local code enforcing agencies should be notified before the work started.
  • If you already have an existing 240V outlet and are just mounting a Level 2 EV charger, this does not require a permit.
  • Permits can be helpful in many ways. Permits help you qualify for grants and rebates in your area. They also ensure your installer follows the best practices for your jurisdiction when installing.
  • Permits for EV charger upgrades also help as documentation when reporting changes to your insurance company and for future instances when home inspection is necessary.

Will the electrician file the permit for my home EV charger?

  • In most cases, yes, you should have your installer handle this unless you feel comfortable handling this on your own.
  • Make sure to request a permit from your installer so that they adhere to local regulations.
  • In some cases, installers may charge a homeowner more for filing a permit. This is natural, as the work that comes with an EV charger permit takes time and effort on their behalf.

Is it hard to get a permit for home EV charger?

No. It is a fairly simple and standard procedure that requires attention and some time. Obviously, you do not need any permits to use Level 1 charger, but it might be not convenient to use it since Level 1 charger has lower charging speed and it could take ages to charge up your electric car’s battery.

We believe that getting a permit should never be a bottleneck to upgrade your home and set up a Level 2 EV charger for faster, more convenient EV charging experience.
