The typical charging time for a Level 2 EV charger is around 3-6 hours to reach 80+% of your battery. However, there are a number of factors that are important to know how long exactly it will take to charge your car.
The most important factor is the charger. If you use a Level 1 charger that comes with your car, it can take you up to 36 hours or more to charge your car. Level 2 charger is much more powerful and can charge your car 5-7 times faster.
Secondly, it’s your car. Different EVs can accept different power. The popular Tesla Model 3 and Tesla Model Y among the other most popular Tesla models can accept 11kW of power, whereas the Nissan Leaf can accept 6.6kW.
If you decided to get an electric car and started to read about EV charging, you should have come across an instruction to avoid charging your EV above 80%. Do you wonder why? Battery hygiene.
Typical EV batteries have a limited number of cycles. If you keep discharging your battery to 0 and then charging it up to 100%, it can affect the health of the battery and reduce the range of the vehicle.
Therefore, the rule of thumb is always to keep your battery between 20% and 80% (or 10% to 90%).
If you want to learn how much time you can save by installing a Level 2 charger at your home, please use our custom-built EV range calculator. Select your electric vehicle make and model, how much you pay for electricity, and switch it between Level 1 and Level 2. The calculator also shows your car's range after you charge it to 80%.
