Making EVs more accessible with the Hyundai Evolve+ EV subscription

Making EVs more accessible with the Hyundai Evolve+ EV subscription

Want more flexibility when purchasing a car? Meet Hyundai Evolve+: a new EV monthly subscription program to give consumers the ability to test out Hyundai’s latest EVs, the Kona and IONIQ 5, without long-term commitments. Here’s everything you need to know and how it’s changing the EV adoption game.

What is Hyundai Evolve+?

Hyundai Evolve+ is a monthly (28 day) subscription service that offers consumers the ability to rent a Kona Electric for $699/month and IONIQ 5 for $899/month. The service is all-inclusive and covers 1,000 miles a month, insurance, maintenance, registration and roadside assistance. What makes this program so flexible is the ability for subscribers to cancel their subscription at any time and not be bound to any other commitments. Driving over 1,000 miles in a month leads to an additional charge of $20 per 100 miles until the 1,500-mile mark. After this, the price increases significantly at a price of $1 per extra mile. What if you don’t drive all 1,000 miles in a month? Luckily, the unused miles roll over to the next month.

Evolve+ is the first EV subscription of its kind, catered to the ‘EV-curious’ car shopper who is intrigued by owning an electric vehicle but might not know yet if it’s right for their lifestyle. Through this subscription-based option, Hyundai hopes to “increase EV adoption and awareness as customers transition into an EV future”

Am I eligible for the Hyundai Evolve+ program?

The program is currently available in six states: Colorado, Oregon, South Carolina, New Jersey, Massachusetts and Maryland. Hyundai has plans to expand further but has not released where to next. In order to qualify for the program, you need to be:

  • 25 years or older
  • Have a clean driving record
  • 3+ years of driving experience
  • Own a valid drivers license
  • Have a credit score of 650 or higher
  • Have a valid credit card under your name

How does the Evolve+ program work?

If you live in one of the six states and meet all the criteria above, it’s your lucky day! You can get started by downloading the Hyundai Evolve+ app at the Apple Store or Google Play, entering your zipcode and start browsing Kona and IONIQ 5 models near you. From there, you can select a monthly term and follow the in-app instructions to qualify. Pay for your subscription via credit card, reserve your vehicle and voila! You’re all set to pick up the vehicle at the dealership, and start driving electric.

Why is Hyundai coming out with this program now?

Like any new technology, transitioning to an electric vehicle can be daunting for some, as it requires additional education and practicing new behaviors that can be scary, such as charging the car instead of filling up at a gas station. By creating the Evolve+ program, Hyundai is giving consumers a chance to experience driving an electric vehicle in a flexible and affordable way. Think of this as an opportunity to test trial not only your next car, but electric vehicle driving as well.

Evolve+ also caters to specific cohorts of people whose lifestyle does not fit the current long-term car purchasing and leasing models. These people include college students, short-term remote workers and people with vacation homes who need cars for shorter periods of time each year.

What about charging my car using the Hyundai Evolve+ program?

There are three ways of charging your electric vehicle:

  • Home charging:
  • Level 1 charger: uses a standard 110 Volt household electrical outlet to charge an EV. It is the slowest type of EV charging and typically adds 2-5 miles of range per hour of charging. This is the charger that typically comes with the car.
  • Level 2 charger: requires an installation. They plug into a 240-volt outlet (like your washing machine or air conditioning unit) and add more than 30 miles of range per hour.
  • Public charging:
  • Level 3 charger: super fast chargers available in public places, such as shopping malls, grocery stores and parking lots. They typically add around 100 miles of range per hour.

As of right now Evolve+ does not provide any support for charging or installing a Level 2 charger in your home. The Kona and IONIQ 5 both come with Level 1 chargers which can be plugged directly into a regular outlet in your home. However, charging this way is slow and not suitable for every EV driver.
